Our History

Ynysowen RFC were formed in 2000 following the merger of long standing rivals Aberfan and Troedyrhiw. At the start the team played on The Grove in Aberfan with the Angel in Troedyrhiw used as the club house. The first two coaches of Ynysowen RFC after the merger was Cooky Len Owen and Robbie Wathen.

We are a small rugby club located in the borough of Merthyr Tydfil. We are a community run club who and are very lucky and grateful for the level of support from local residents and shops supporting the club. Ynysowen offers a mini and junior section which has been running for the past 10 years which offers a good level of coaching, Sunday mornings can be busy but we wouldnt have it any other way.

We run two senior teams 1st and seconds and we play our home matches at The Willows which is located in Troedyrhiw. We train in two locations The Willows Field Troedyrhiw and Grove Park Aberfan normally on a Tuesday and Thursday 6.45 to 8pm.

All players are local and have passion and belief in their club and fellow team mates and every player always give 100%.

Our hearts and passion are in the right place, we all believe and want to succeed and are heading in the right direction.

Anyone and every one is welcome to come and watch, support or join in, you will have the warmest welcome at Ynysowen RFC.

Ynysowen by wikipedia

The area was referred to and written as Ynys Owen as early as 1630, noting that the narrow valley was heavily wooded, with various traditional Tyddyns (long-house farms) marking out the various rural farming territories. Ynys Owen, which translates from Welsh to English as Owain’s riverside meadow, has been claimed by some to possibly commemorate Owain Glyn Dwr, whose followers were involved in an uprising around 1400.
