Usk 24 Ynysowen 31

The Sharks began the new campaign in good form as they visited Gwent club Usk in this pre season curtain raiser. The visitors kicked off and Thomas Hughes won his side a scrum when his heavy tackle dislodged the ball. Outside half Chris Davies was kicking well as the home team began to exert some pressure. However a loose ball in midfield was picked up by Hughes who quickly fed right wing Mathew Evans. he made ground into the opposition half before swerving passed the fullback to score a fine individual try which was well converted by Davies.
Dewi Morris was making good ground with a number of penetrating runs.He found Craig Maybank who went close in the corner. Second row Gareth Jones was also heavily involved in the action as the Sharks began to dominate this period. Lloyd Davies found Rhyan Williams with a short ball and he crossed near the posts with Davies again converting. Morris was again making his presence felt with some big tackles whilst flanker Jamie Day was getting through a mountain of work. Good work by Usk resulted in Tom Simmonds crossing wide out with the conversion missing.
Nathan Hodgkinson made a good catch and clearance. Another burst by Morris saw him tackled just short but a fine off load to the supporting Gerwyn Davies resulted in a good score with a well struck conversion bringing the half to a close.
The second period started with the home team pressing with solid defensive work by Evans. Good work down the left by Liam Addis took play into the 22. A series of quick rucks with Gerwyn Morris driving close in saw Williams crash over for his second score.
A big Ynysowen counter attack with Hodgkinson and Addis heavily involved saw Garrett drive over close to the posts. The home side kept pressing and two late try's rewarded their persistence.
This was a good work out for both clubs as they continue their preparations towards the start of the season.
