Treharris 12 Ynysowen Sharks 27

The Sharks began the new season by making the short trip down the valley to play local rivals Treharris Phoenix. The hosts started brightly and had the advantage of a strong breeze during the first period but were met with resolute defence in which brother's Lewis and Thomas Hughes were prominent. The visitors gradually got into the game with Andrew O'Keefe stealing a line out ball to set up a series of attacks which were well defended.
Prop forward Michael Morris was working hard in the scrums and was heavily involved in the loose. Another good take at the line out by O'Keefe set up a huge line out drive resulting in flanker Luke Price touching down.
Treharris responded and won a succession of penalties in midfield three of which full back Ross Jones struck well to establish his side the lead.  The Sharks regained the ascendancy with a determined run by Jamie Caviel down the middle. He found wing Mathew  Evans who made ground and set up a ruck. The forwards hammered away and scrum half Craig Maybanks found hooker Dewi Morris on the blind side and he drove over from close range. The try was well converted by Gavin Richards. The home side got back on terms on the stroke of half time when Jones struck another well judged penalty following a scum infringement.
With the strong breeze in their favour the Sharks began to dominate territorially with Richards controlling events and kicking beautifully to the corners He was well supported by full back Chris Davies. A good drive by Morris won a penalty which Richards struck over. The visiting pack were able to exert considerable pressure at the break down which resulted in a number of penalties being awarded which Richards kicked to extend his teams lead. Treharris tried to counter attack but the defence held firm with Jarrod Jones putting in a number of strong tackles.
Richards then sliced open the defence and found Jones on his out side and close to the try line but he was thwarted by a fine cover tackle. Rhyan Williams made a number of powerful bursts up field resulting in a final penalty which Richards kicked to conclude the scoring.
In the final seconds home full back Ross Jones suffered a nasty knee injury. All at Ynysowen wish Ross a speedy recovery.
This week the Sharks are home to Llandaff whilst the Dynamos start heir campaign at home against Porth seconds. Meanwhile the newly formed youth travel to Cardiff Harlequins in the first round of the bowl.
